Environnements économique et éducatif des ménages et difficultés scolaires des enfants au Mali

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to study the role played by household environment (economic and educational) on school failure in Mali. We use data collected in 2006. This data set provides information both on economic and educational environment of every child. The results indicate that the lack of resources is more damaging for girls than boy’s education. Similarly, the success of girls is sensitive to the presence of educated adult in the household, which is not the case for boys. Résumé - L’objectif de cette étude est de mesurer l’importance de l’environnement familial des élèves (sous sa double dimension économique et éducative) sur le risque d’échec scolaire au Mali. Nous mobilisons les données de l’enquête ELIM-2006 qui présentent l’avantage de disposer de plusieurs indicateurs du niveau de vie et du capital éducatif des ménages que nous introduisons simultanément dans les estimations. Les résultats indiquent que les contraintes de ressources permanentes pèsent plus sur la scolarité des filles que des garçons. De même la réussite scolaire des filles est sensible au capital éducatif des adultes secondaires du ménage, ce qui n’est nullement le cas chez les garçons.
