Abstract

The paper commemorates the intellectual life of Luigi Pasinetti, who sadly passed away at the end of January of this year. We present and discuss the main phases of his studies and academic contributions culminating in his 1981 opus Structural Change and Economic Growth. We show how Pasinetti developed the main ideas that were to guide his research, already in the late 1950s and early 1960s. We then describe the path breaking significance of his novel analytical formulation regarding the theory of vertically integrated processes and how it constitutes a positive improvement on the debates related to the critiques of neoclassical capital theory. The paper ends by highlighting the consistency of Pasinetti's theoretical approach with his moral philosophy centred on the priority of labour over capital.
