Abstract

. Classification JEL : F10, P20, P33 [eng] The Integration of Transition Economies into the World Trading System . A country’s trade policy is a key link in the transmission of price signals from the world market to domestic resource allocation and to the economy’s effective integration in the world trading system. But integration in the world trading system depends on whether the policies and institutions of a country and its trading partners are conducive to the mutually beneficial exchange of goods and services based on specialisation and comparative advantage. The purpose of this study is to take stock of where countries in CEE and the FSU stand regarding trade policy and their integration in the world trading system. The emphasis is on the present and future challenges facing these countries rather than on a historical review of their reform efforts ; and the focus is on the countries of the FSU where the remaining challenges are the greatest. .
