Right-turn-on-red queueing process at signalized intersections with a short right-turn lane

Abstract

For right-turn-on-red (RTOR) movements at signalized intersections, in addition to being subject to the periodically change of traffic signals, RTOR vehicles are frequently interrupted at any time within the red phase due to the blockage, which makes that the performance of RTOR control has a strong instability. While the operation of RTOR with a short right-turn lane is well understood in the literature, there is no clear understanding on the RTOR queue dynamics and how the RTOR queueing evolution process is affected by the possible factors. To this end, this study developed an analytical framework using a signal-state-based queueing model to evaluate the use of RTOR control. The analytical framework establishes a series of evaluation indicators for RTOR control, which can explicitly quantify the inherent uncertainty of RTOR queue at signalized intersections. The obtained results were further examined through VISSIM and the comparisons showed that proposed analytical model can evaluate the RTOR queue with a small error. Furthermore, various factors influencing RTOR queue were examined by numerical experiments. These results show that the obtained analytical expressions of RTOR queue dynamics can give us valuable insights and contribute to supporting the right-turn movement management of signalized intersections from the perspective of queueing processes.
