Abstract

We examine the impacts of new energy-efficiency requirements on energy consumption in four types of large new commercial buildings. Energy savings vary from 11% for a large department store to 23% for office buildings if building designs comply with the new standards' requirements. Additional cost savings associated with a reduction up to 30% in electrical power demand are also shown. Finally, the reductions in the size of cooling equipment suggest that the standards may also help to lower the first costs of new buildings.
