Abstract

•Despite the continuous debates no agreed definition on ‘smart’ concept is provided.•The ‘smart’ concept represents an urban model beyond the urbanisation in cities.•Planning ‘smartly’ requires integrated approaches of planners and stakeholders.•A multi-scalar approach planning is decisive for smart actions in cities.
