Do Left-Wing State Governments Reduce Inequality in Civil Servant Salaries?

Abstract

Since the 2006 federalism reform, it has been the responsibility of Germany’s Länder to regulate the salaries of their civil servants. This article examines whether left-wing state governments have taken the opportunity to reduce inequality in the salaries of their civil servants. The results do not show that governments of the left reduced inequality more than governments of the right or center.
