L'invention du chômage

Abstract

This article deals with the historical construction of the Unemployment statistics at the end of the 19th century in Europe. In France, the 1896 census was a milestone by introducing the following innovation: the statistical authorities started to survey only the salaried (wage-earning), namely the employed who work for a boss. Hence, the home workers, self-employed and jobless interim employed are not taken into account.
