Abstract

The lodging industry can be considered the core of tourism industry within a destination. Tourism development within a destination is interlinked with an adequate supply of accommodation facilities tailored to tourist demands. The present paper investigates the current profile of Romanian hotel industry, the dominant sector of Romanian lodging industry, in order to relate it with the trends in tourist arrivals by internal destinations and by type of hotels. The international brand penetration rate and the concentration of hotels within hotel groups are also investigated, since these two factors can increase the visibility and the distinctive features of the Romanian hotel industry. The results of the present investigations indicate that Romanian hotel industry while supporting the destination does not have any special feature to enhance the attractiveness of Romania as a tourist destination due to important flaws in hotel developments.
