AI Speech Generation: Balancing Disruption, Opportunity, and Performer Rights

Abstract

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have led to text-to-speech and voice cloning systems that are nearly indistinguishable from human performances, causing both excitement and apprehension in the voice industry. While AI-generated voices offer unprecedented opportunities for scalability, efficiency, and creative experimentation, they also raise urgent concerns about consent, labor rights, and the erosion of artistic identity. Drawing on historical precedent, industry data, and firsthand interviews with practitioners on both sides of the technology, this chapter investigates the ethical and economic challenges arising from AI-based voice synthesis. By exploring the perspectives of a veteran voice actor and a CEO of an AI startup reputed for its ethical practices, we examine how these disruptive technologies can simultaneously threaten and transform professional voice work. Our findings highlight the growing importance of clear contractual boundaries, consent-based data acquisition, and fair compensation structures that treat performers as collaborators rather than expendable data sources. The discussion outlines possible pathways toward a sustainable AI ecosystem—one in which synthetic voices augment rather than replace human artistry, and where rights, revenue, and reputation remain securely in the hands of the people behind the microphone.
