Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is profoundly reshaping media production, consumption, and representation. This chapter examines AI’s dual role as both a facilitator of creative expression and a potential homogenizing force, affecting the diversity of voices and perspectives in contemporary media. AI technologies, including generative models, enhance creative productivity by lowering technical barriers and enabling new forms of artistic experimentation. However, they also risk reinforcing biases and reducing novelty by drawing on existing patterns in training data. Empirical studies suggest that AI tools enhance individual creativity but may reduce collective diversity by promoting stylistic convergence. While AI-driven content generation broadens access to creative opportunities, it may also lead to “synthetic tokenism,” where superficial representation masks deeper systemic inequalities. Furthermore, AI’s integration into journalism and entertainment raises ethical concerns regarding authorship, authenticity, and the role of human agency in storytelling. This chapter explores the complex interplay between AI, creativity, and media diversity, assessing the broader cultural and societal implications. It argues that the future of AI-driven media requires a recalibration of how creativity is defined and valued. A balanced approach, incorporating regulatory oversight and ethical AI development, is necessary to ensure that AI serves as a tool for innovation without undermining originality and genuine inclusivity.
