Abstract

The increasing complexity and uncertainty of global economic, environmental, and social systems necessitate a fundamental shift in how businesses operate and create value. Traditional business models, often designed for short-term efficiency and linear growth, are proving inadequate in addressing systemic risks such as climate change, resource depletion, and socio-economic inequalities. In response, a new paradigm is emerging, one that integrates resilience, restoration, and regeneration into business model design. The Resilient, Restorative, and Regenerative Business Model (3R-BM) represents a strategic evolution from sustainability to circularity, embedding principles that enable firms to not only withstand disruptions but also contribute positively to their ecosystems. A resilient business model ensures adaptability and long-term viability in volatile environments. A restorative business model actively seeks to repair and replenish natural and social capital. A regenerative business model goes beyond mitigation, fostering conditions that enhance the health and vitality of economic, environmental, and social systems. This chapter explores the conceptual foundations, key characteristics, and strategic implications of the 3R-BM. It examines how organisations can embed resilience, restoration, and regeneration into their value propositions, operational structures, and stakeholder engagements. Through theoretical analysis and empirical insights, we will investigate how these models enhance corporate longevity, drive competitive advantage, and contribute to broader societal well-being. By framing business innovation through the lens of resilience, restoration, and regeneration, this chapter aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the 3R-BM as a transformative pathway towards sustainable and circular economic systems.
