Abstract

The future of work, particularly for knowledge workers, hinges on the balance between in-office and remote work. Simplistically viewed, the development of workplace distribution can take on various speeds and outcomes, represented as a metaphorical “distribution” between office- and home-based work. This concept suggests a movement towards either a stable, gradual change in workplace dynamics or a more radical shift towards digital and remote work environments. In one scenario, the physical workplace undergoes gradual changes, maintaining its relevance while integrating more digital elements. This scenario anticipates that physical workspaces will continue to exist but will evolve to focus on collaboration, well-being, and productivity in a more digitised environment. Alternatively, a more kinetic development suggests that workplaces which successfully integrate digital advancements with physical spaces will thrive. Here, the physical workplace might shrink in size but gain importance in complementing digital workspaces, creating a balanced hybrid model. In the most radical scenario, the digital workplace dominates, leaving physical offices largely redundant. This shift, accelerated by technological advancements and societal changes, positions remote work as the primary mode, with physical spaces serving niche purposes. Overall, the future workplace model will be shaped by megatrends like digitalisation, societal norms, and individualisation, requiring organisations to navigate and balance both digital and analogue processes to build resilient and adaptable hybrid office workplaces.
