Abstract

Strategic foresight is a critical tool in navigating the uncertainties of the future. It involves structured methods to anticipate and prepare for potential changes, guiding decision-makers towards sustainable, long-term solutions. While many rely on extrapolating existing trends to predict the near future, this approach limits our understanding of the complex, volatile forces shaping the long term. Studies show that companies adopting strategic foresight are more likely to outperform competitors, demonstrating the value of foresight in a rapidly changing environment. Megatrends, fundamental uncertainties, unexpected events, and human biases are central components of future analysis. Each plays a vital role in shaping the trajectory of organisations. As futurists stress, the future cannot be predicted with certainty, but strategic foresight allows businesses to adapt and respond more effectively. Acknowledging human biases, such as confirmation and optimism biases, helps leaders make more informed decisions. Ultimately, understanding future customer needs and potential disruptions is crucial for maintaining competitiveness in an evolving landscape.
