Abstract

The circular economy represents a transformative shift in value creation, capture, and delivery, akin to the digital revolution. This paradigm shift demands companies transition from one-time transactions to ongoing value provision, focusing on durability, modularity, and ease of repair. Value capture involves retaining or extracting value from products through recommerce, reuse, part harvesting, resource recovery, refurbishing, and remanufacturing. Service-oriented models redefine value delivery, generating recurring revenue through subscriptions or service contracts. Circular business models outperform linear ones by reducing material and component costs, shortening production times, and generating multiple income cycles from repair and redistribution. They enhance resilience, mitigate supply chain disruptions, and reduce environmental impact. Key challenges include redesigning products for circularity, reconfiguring supply chains, shifting consumer attitudes, managing financial investments, integrating digital technologies, developing employee skills, complying with regulations, and fostering ecosystem collaboration. By leveraging the Circular Economy Strategy Framework and following the Circular Economy Transition Checklist, companies can systematically address these challenges, leading to sustainable growth and competitive advantage. The Manufacturing Circular Maturity Framework provides a structured pathway for assessing and advancing circularity.
