Abstract

Connected products and components powered by IoT technology are crucial for the circular economy. They enable real-time data collection and analysis, optimizing product design, enhancing customer satisfaction, and extending product lifespans. These products facilitate efficient redistribution models by providing real-time insights into product status and usage, supporting Product-as-a-Service models through predictive maintenance and real-time monitoring, and improving asset tracking and transparency in the sharing economy. Connected technologies enhance recommerce by ensuring the quality and reliability of used products and optimizing redistribution logistics through precise tracking. They also extend product use by enabling timely interventions and support recycling operations through improved sorting and material recovery. A robust IT infrastructure for connected products is essential, incorporating coherent architecture, IoT platform connectivity, advanced analytics, and multilayered security to support scalable and secure operations. This chapter explores how connected products drive sustainability, efficiency, and profitability in the circular economy, focusing on SmartFlow Pumps Inc. as a fictive example. It also discusses the importance of data privacy, edge computing, and the role of sensors in recycling. The capability map and checklist provide manufacturers with a structured approach to implementing connected products, ensuring optimized processes, enhanced product lifecycle management, and a more sustainable and profitable circular economy.
