Abstract

Digitization is critical for integrating circular principles into manufacturing, supported by the Sustainable Manufacturing Intelligence Framework (SMIF). APIs serve as the backbone of digital integration, enabling seamless communication and data exchange across various platforms. Event-driven architectures enhance operational efficiency through real-time processing and response, improving decision-making and resource management. Digital warranties foster trust and encourage participation in circular practices by making warranties easily transferable, extendable, and verifiable. Smart contracts streamline circular economy agreements, ensuring efficiency and transparency without intermediaries. In Part III, we connect circular business models with digital strategies, providing manufacturers with tools and knowledge for excelling in a digitally enabled circular economy. The SMIF outlines essential digital capabilities for embedding circular principles, emphasizing customer engagement, IT system adaptation, IoT integration, and data-driven decision-making. This framework aligns digital transformations with circular goals, reducing operational inefficiencies. Additionally, the Digitization Checklist offers specific steps to implement these strategies, ensuring manufacturers can effectively navigate the digital landscape and achieve sustainable growth and competitive advantage.
