Abstract

Switzerland | In 2016 Olivier Cheseaux, an UoAS architect passionate about heritage, founded Anakolodge with a concept based on the respect of the vernacular architectural heritage of the Alpine mountains. Our ancestors were building to address their needs when space was becoming scarce for human beings and livestock. This survival architecture was gradually lost when modernity, comfort and mechanisation took hold of human beings. In Val d’Hérens, the remnants of traditional agricultural buildings are still visible. Ruins of two barns, two granaries and two sheds were rescued and then restored in complete respect for local architectural tradition typical to the Valais region. These contemporary transformations—without any artifice, a fake sense of ‘oldness’ or imitation—showcase this heritage. Having celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2021, Anakolodge has hosted visitors from all over the world. With the Covid 19 pandemic, Swiss guests looking for nature and authenticity have come in large numbers to recharge their batteries.
