Marcus Cotton on How to Run a Sustainable Hotel in the Himalayas

Abstract

Nepal | Marcus Cotton first visited Nepal in 1983, where he worked for Nepal’s leading conservation and development charity, the King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation (now the National Trust). Later, he joined Tiger Tops at the invitation of the owner, Jim Edwards, to oversee the group’s environmental and responsible tourism activities and enhance administrative and financial management. Currently, he is working at Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge since 2001, where he continues to be the co-owner and Managing Director, a mentor to the team running this iconic property that sets the standards for regenerative tourism in the middle hills of Nepal. The Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge is one of the handfuls of properties in Nepal independently audited for its sustainability. A keen observer of Nepal’s socio-political evolution, his keen interest is that tourism be a force for good in Nepal’s economy, especially in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic.
