Abstract

India | As the son of Fateh Singh Rathore, one of India’s best-known Tigermen, Dr. Goverdhan Singh Rathore was privileged to grow up in and around Ranthambore National Park. Having seen the uphill battle to save the park and its tigers, Goverdhan wanted to continue his father’s legacy. After graduating from medical school in 1989, he started a mobile health care program visiting villages around the park. His visits provided insights into the local communities, their challenges and how to solve them while educating them about the tiger, its habitat and the need to save it. He is actively involved with NGOs like the Prakratik Society, Tiger Watch and Ranthambhore Foundation. Goverdhan started a Jungle Lodge called Khem Villas with his wife Usha. Built on a barren tract of land adjacent to the park, it has been re-wilded using local fauna to merge with the park habitat so wildlife can move freely through the lodge.
