Abstract

The transportation and logistics industry faces a distrust problem that results in coordination failure. Distributed ledger technology has the potential to solve the trust issue by guaranteeing data sovereignty to each player. In a setting where logistics stakeholders are willing to share their transaction data, efficiency gains in the stream of goods, capital, and information are discussed. We provide an outlook on possible industry disruption if a decentralized system is also governed in a decentralized fashion. Possible disruptions include the atomization of value generation, the destruction of market entry barriers and information asymmetries, a shift in industry stakeholder structure, and the rise of coopetitive business models. Finally, we give an overview of how these effects can lead to an improvement of social fairness beyond an industrial level.
