Bordes y límites del modelo de ciclo de vida del producto turístico. Reflexiones desde el terreno de investigación

Abstract

Se pretende discutir la aplicabilidad y el alcance de la idea de ciclo de vida del producto/destino turístico, considerando que el uso del concepto como herramienta teórica se ha desarrollado como un poderoso paradigma de interpretación del funcionamiento de los sistemas turísticos, muchas veces sin una debida evaluación crítica. Aquí se plantea que la teoría del ciclo turístico presenta limitaciones en los términos de su propia concepción, en la medida en que no considera la variabilidad de los factores coyunturales en el subsistema estático, los cuales pueden ser decisivos para el mantenimiento de su estructura turística y su establecimiento como un destino turístico activo. En ese sentido, serán evaluadas algunas características peculiares del sistema turístico en la ciudad brasileña de Ilhéus que parecen no ajustarse plenamente al modelo “clásico” de Butler y sus desarrollos en la arena de la teoría del turismo.
