Abstract

7 - Ethyl-3,6,9,11-tetramethoxy-8-propionylnaphthobsocoumarin (V), synthesized from 3,5-dimethoxy benzoic acid (I), through 3-trichloromethyl-4,6-dimethoxy phthalide (II), 2-(β,β-dichloroethyl)-3,5-dimethoxy benzoic acid (III) and 2-carboxy-4,6-dimethoxy acetic acid (IV). 3,5-Dimethoxy benzoic acid was converted into 3-trichloromethyl-4,6-dimethoxy phthalide by treating with chloral hydrate and sulphuric acid. 3-Trichloromethyl-4,6-dimethoxy phthalide was converted into 2-(β,β-dichloroethyl)-3,5-dimethoxy benzoic acid by treating with glacial acetic acid and zinc dust. 2-(β,β-Dichloroethyl)-3,5-dimethoxy benzoic acid was converted into 2-carboxy-4,6-dimethoxy phenyl acetic acid simply by hydrolysis with 98% sulphuric acid. 2-Carboxy-4,6-dimethoxy phenyl acetic acid was converted into 7-ethyl-3,6,9,11-tetramethoxy-8- propionylnaphthobisocoumarin (V) by refluxing with propionic anhydride and dry pyridine
