Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of photoprotection as an essential component in melasma treatment, comparing it with therapies that do not prioritize this approach. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify evidence-based best practices for preventing recurrence and progression of this dermatological condition. A systematic review of 18 studies was conducted using scientific databases. Inclusion criteria focused on studies evaluating the efficacy of photoprotection in patients with melasma undergoing pharmacological treatment. The reviewed studies demonstrated that when photoprotection is properly integrated into treatment, it significantly reduces melasma recurrence. Treatments without this component showed higher rates of recurrence and disease progression. Photoprotection is a crucial factor in melasma treatment. Continuous use, along with pharmacological therapy, provides better long-term outcomes in reducing spots and preventing progression.
