Abstract

In 2024, energy consumption in Ecuador continued to be a major challenge due to increased electricity demand in the residential sector, especially due to the intensive use of refrigerators. A study in the Belisario Quevedo parish, El Forastero sector, analysed eight families and revealed factors such as the prolongation of the useful life of appliances, their inadequate location and lack of maintenance, which significantly increased energy consumption. Although these practices were perceived as cost-saving measures, they resulted in higher costs in the long run. Compared to other Latin American countries, such as Brazil and Mexico, which have implemented subsidies for efficient appliances and educational campaigns, Ecuador lags behind in adopting similar measures. Countries such as Uruguay have excelled in the transition to renewable energy, while Ecuador relies in part on non-renewable energy sources, exacerbating the environmental impact of excessive consumption. The study emphasised the need for community workshops to encourage energy efficiency and promote the use of modern appliances. Ecuador faces significant challenges compared to countries such as Chile and Colombia, which have implemented strict regulations and energy audits. However, with fiscal incentives, educational campaigns and the integration of renewable energy, the country could improve its energy efficiency and reduce its environmental footprint, positioning itself as a regional leader in sustainability.
