Epidemiological characterization of infant mortality in Saint Christopher

Introduction: Infant mortality indicators show social development; Cuba's results place it in first place in the Americas. Objective: To epidemiologically characterize infant mortality, according to selected variables. Method: Observational epidemiological study, carried out in San Cristóbal, Artemisa province in the period 2002 – 2022. Source of information records from the health statistics department. Results: The mortality rate shows a slightly decreasing trend, at the expense of the decrease in births, not deaths, decreasing by 39.3% compared to the extreme years of the series, decreasing irregularly. Mortality is more frequent in males. The main cause of mortality in children under 1 year of age is hypoxia and birth asphyxia, followed by conditions of the perinatal period, the infant mortality rate will tend to decrease; The expected value for the year 2023 will be 4.2 per 1000 live births. Conclusions: In the last 21 years, infant mortality has shown irregular fluctuations, with a tendency to decrease.
