Language means of expressing motivation in German poetry texts

Background. The focus of modern linguistics is the problem of speech influence. One of the key categories that ensures the implementation of influence is the ability of language to express a will and orient the addressee towards a certain action or internal reaction. In this context, the study of impulsive statements in German poetry is particularly valuable. Poets widely use various means of expressing impulsiveness, demonstrating their will towards the interlocutor (reader) and creating a connection of attention that helps achieve the main goal of speech influence. Purpose. The article is devoted to the analysis of the imperative sentence and the means of its linguistic expression in the texts of German Romanticists. The author aims to describe the diverse manifestations of the category of impulsion and reveal its stylistic potential. Materials and methods. The study is based on the method of continuous sampling in the selection of practical material, as well as the descriptive method of linguostylistical analysis. The research material comprises the works of 19th‑century Romantic poets. Results. The analysis showed that the category of impetus is represented in the texts of German Romantic poetry by the following main linguistic means: imperative sentences, modal verbs, the conjunctive mood, and ellipsis. Imperative statements implement a wide range of pragmatic functions: from direct orders and insistent appeals/instructions to self‑expression, rhetorical appeals, and philosophical worldviews. Anaphora, address, and syntactic parallelism also serve as stimulants of speech influence. Application area. The research results can be used in teaching courses on linguopoetics, stylistic grammar, and in a seminar on the language features of German poetry.
