Treatment of chronic pain with cannabidiol

Chronic migraine and chronic pain in general is a debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Characterized by frequent and intense episodes of headache, often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound, this disease can significantly compromise patients’ quality of life. Although conventional treatments such as analgesics, triptans and preventive therapies are widely used, a considerable portion of patients do not obtain satisfactory relief or suffer from unwanted side effects. In this context, cannabidiol (CBD) emerges as a promising alternative. The study aimed to identify, based on scientific evidence, the characteristics of the medicinal use of cannabidiol as a therapeutic resource for chronic pain. This is a literature review with data grouping and knowledge synthesis on the subject. For the search, the following academic databases were used: Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System on-line (MEDLINE), Latin American Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), using the descriptors Cannabidiol Therapeutic, Toxicity. CBD, one of the main non-psychoactive components of the Cannabis sativa plant, has been widely studied for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anxiolytic properties.
