Level of physical activity and perceived barriers to its performance: A study with school teachers

Abstract

Physical inactivity is a lifestyle that is causing chronic diseases, mental health problems and poor job performance. The objective was to identify the level of physical activity and the barriers perceived by school teachers. The type of study was quantitative, with descriptive and correlational designs. 371 teachers participated, of which 109 (29.4%) were men and 262 (70.6%) were women, aged 20 or older. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the Barriers to Being Active Questionnaire (BBAQ) were applied. An analysis was carried out using the SPSS program and the main results obtained were that 36.7% of male and 63.4% of female teachers are in the inactive level. Furthermore, it was found that men and women report a high level of probability in the barriers lack of time (M=62.4%, F=62.2%), lack of energy (M=63.3%, F=61.5%) and lack of will (M=56.9%, F=56.5%), which allowed us to conclude that female teachers show a high level of inactivity and that lack of time, energy and will predominate in both genders and in the age ranges studied.
