The weight of stigma: A bibliometric review of mental health and social exclusion

Abstract

Introduction: This study presents a bibliometric review focused on stigma related to mental health and its connection to social exclusion. The objective is to analyze the scientific production in this field to identify trends, barriers, opportunities, and challenges, with a special emphasis on the interaction between these two crucial topics. Methods: A bibliometric approach covering the period from 2019 to 2024 was utilized. Inclusion criteria were established to select relevant academic publications, journal articles, theses, and conference papers. Databases such as Scopus, Lens, and Google Scholar were consulted to gather a wide range of scientific and academic literature. Results: The obtained results reflect the importance of addressing stigma surrounding mental health and its impact on social exclusion. The reviewed literature highlights the need to continue research in this area to better understand the associated barriers, opportunities, and challenges. A clear interaction between mental health stigma and social exclusion is observed, emphasizing the urgency of implementing effective strategies to reduce the negative impact of these issues on society. Conclusions: It is essential for future research and actions to focus on promoting public awareness, education, and intervention to combat stigma and exclusion in this crucial area
