Abstract

Introduction: One of the most common forms of gas poisoning is caused by carbon monoxide (CO). CO is an odourless, tasteless, colorless and non-irritating gas formed by the combustion of hydrocarbons. Objective: To describe the medical-legal aspects of carbon monoxide poisoning. Methods: A non-systematic bibliographic review was carried out with descriptive methodology in databases such as: PubMed, SciELO, ScienceDirect, Elsevier and others, considering studies from the last 5 years in Spanish and English that referred to the subject. Results: 45 articles were found, of which only 30 articles between thesis, clinical cases, bibliographic reviews, and more met the inclusion criteria. Discussion: Carbon monoxide is one of the main causes of death due to poisoning worldwide and has been called the "silent killer" due to its lack of macroscopic pathognomonic lesions, so its diagnosis is accompanied by a complete analysis between autopsy and autopsy. complementary exams. Conclusions: A thorough pathological examination in the diagnosis of CO poisoning may be sufficient. In forensic cases where the causes of death are not clarified, it is advisable to carry out toxicological analysis.
