Adult autistic voices in society: personal and shared experiences

Abstract

This article, based on the neurodiversity paradigm, explores the experiences of 62 autistic adults in Chile through structured interviews. Its purpose is to highlight the social and structural barriers they face in areas such as education, health, employment, and administrative procedures. Methodologically, it employs a qualitative approach, analyzing subjective experiences with an emphasis on the stigma described by Goffman. The results reveal persistent discrimination, a lack of accommodations, late diagnoses, and the burden of "masking" or social camouflage, especially among women. The article also highlights the positive impact of diagnosis in adulthood, allowing individuals to reframe their experiences and fostering self-acceptance. The conclusion underscores the urgent need to build inclusive environments, train professionals, and eradicate stereotypes to guarantee the equitable and respectful participation of autistic people in society.
