Abstract

This study aimed to determine the levels of physical activity during recess among secondary school students in the eastern region of the Dominican Republic. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. The International Student Lifestyle Questionnaire (CIEVA) was administered to a sample of 1,013 participants (450 males, 563 females). 63.6% of males reported engaging in daily physical activity during recess, compared to a range of 44.0–46.9% among females. Overall, approximately 60% of students reported participating in some form of exercise during this period. However, more than 30% did not reach the minimum levels recommended by the WHO. Although most students take advantage of recess to exercise, there is a gender gap and a significant proportion of inactive students, which could affect their long-term health. School strategies that promote physical activity during recess are needed, with special attention to less active female students
