Factors Associated with Colorectal Cancer in Patients Treated at INCART

Abstract

Introduction: Colorectal cancer is a significant public health problem, and its onset is associated with familial, metabolic, and behavioral factors. Methods: An observational, analytical, retrospective, case-control study was conducted among patients seen in the colonoscopy unit of the Rosa Emilia Sánchez Pérez de Tavares National Cancer Institute (INCART) between October 2014 and April 2021. A total of 749 patients were included: 596 cases with colorectal cancer and 153 controls. Chi-square tests, odds ratios, and 95% confidence intervals were applied. Results: The mean age of the cases was 61 ± 13 years. 60.2% had a family history of cancer, 71.1% were obese, 52.0% consumed alcohol, and 39.4% were smokers. Associations were observed with urban residence (OR = 1.503; 95% CI: 1.033–2.189), a family history of cancer (OR = 1.528; 95% CI: 1.048–2.229), obesity (OR = 1.505; 95% CI: 1.040–2.200), alcohol consumption (OR = 1.507; 95% CI: 1.100–2.100), and smoking (OR = 1.468; 95% CI: 1.003–2.150). These findings are consistent with previous evidence regarding familial and modifiable factors associated with CRC. Conclusion: Prevention efforts should prioritize the management of obesity, alcohol consumption, and smoking, as well as the assessment of family history.
