Knowledge of nursing staff about their roles and tasks at the Regional Hospital of Pilar 2024

Abstract

The study evaluated the level of knowledge among nursing staff regarding their roles and tasks at the Regional Hospital of Pilar, Paraguay, in 2024. A descriptive, cross-sectional study with a mixed-methods approach—predominantly quantitative—was applied to a sample of 61 professionals selected through snowball sampling. A validated questionnaire was used to assess knowledge in the areas of caregiving, management, teaching, and research. The results showed that most participants correctly identified their caregiving role (89%), and to a lesser extent, their managerial (72%), teaching (63%), and research (70%) functions. Bachelor's degree nurses demonstrated higher levels of knowledge compared to technicians and assistants. Additionally, 93% considered participation in medical rounds essential, and 75% stated that access to laboratory data improves nursing performance. Furthermore, 92% correctly identified infusion protocols as part of their professional duties. Most participants agreed that training has a positive impact on their professional performance. The study concludes that there is a solid foundational knowledge of basic nursing functions, but further training is needed in teaching and research roles. Continuous professional development and clear role delineation within multidisciplinary teams are recommended to enhance care quality and professional autonomy
