Feasibility and benefits of a day center for older adults: a comprehensive approach

Abstract

Population aging creates challenges in caring for older adults. This study analyzes the viability of a day center in the South Macrodistrict of La Paz to improve their quality of life and support caregivers. Through a mixed approach, 372 older adults (65-85 years) and 363 caregivers (40-59 years) in districts 18, 19 and 21 were surveyed. The results indicated that 66.67% of older adults would attend the center, evidencing high demand, while 58.68% of caregivers expressed the need for support. Jointly, the economic viability of the project with affordable rates will be determined. Implementation of the center would benefit older adults with a safe space and recreational activities, while reducing the burden on caregivers. It is concluded that this service is essential for the social and emotional well-being of both parties. It is recommended to evaluate its long-term impact to strengthen active and healthy aging in the community.
