Psychosocial factors, sleep quality and mental health among staff at a Nicaraguan medical center

Abstract

The World Health Organization indicates that poor work environments affect mental health, generating depression and anxiety among workers. This study examines the relationship between psychosocial risks, sleep quality, and mental health at a Medical Center in Nicaragua in 2025. The research employs a mixed-method, observational, cross-sectional design. A sample of 95 physicians was assessed using the digital CEAL-SM questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and GHQ-12; descriptive and inferential statistics were applied. Results show that 51.6% were women, with a mean age of 35 years; 52.6% were specialists. Prevalent psychosocial risks included: emotional demands (62.1% at high risk), vulnerability in the workplace (68.4% at moderate risk), workload (51.6% at moderate risk), and work-life imbalance (43.2% at high risk).
