Challenges for ensuring the integrity of informed consent

Abstract

This article explores the importance of informed consent as an ethical and legal cornerstone in research and clinical practice, highlighting its role in guaranteeing autonomy and informed decision-making. Through various studies, deficiencies in understanding and implementation are evidenced, revealing challenges such as signing without full comprehension and external pressures that compromise its essence. Inequalities in medical scenarios are identified, where treatment needs or promises of benefits generate hasty decisions. The text emphasizes key strategies to strengthen informed consent, including professional training, creation of accessible materials, independent counseling, and promotion of patient participation. It also stresses the importance of ensuring confidentiality, transparency, and continuous ethical review to protect participants' autonomy and foster more just and respectful practices in the interaction between researchers, medical professionals, and patients.
