Diagnosis of working conditions in informal gastronomic providers on the beaches of the Colombian Caribbean

This study analyzes the working conditions of informal workers in the gastronomy sector on the beaches of Puerto Velero (Atlántico, Colombia), in a context of tourism growth and increasing informal employment in coastal areas. Using a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional approach, 35 service providers were surveyed, assessing sociodemographic variables, exposure to physical and ergonomic risks, use of personal protective equipment, and perceptions of job security. The results reveal high levels of precariousness: long hours, limited use of protection, constant exposure to the sun, extreme heat, and uncomfortable postures, especially among men. Gender differences were identified in tasks and risk perception. Furthermore, the majority perceive little concern from employers for their health and safety. The findings reflect a situation of vulnerability and lack of protection that negatively impacts occupational health and quality of working life. The conclusion is that it is urgent to promote the progressive formalization of informal employment, strengthen a culture of prevention, and include these workers in public health and decent work policies, in line with sustainable tourism development.
