Evaluation of Implementation of the Sustainability Agenda for Sustainable Development in a Developing Country

Abstract

This study investigates the types and implementation of sustainability in a developing country. Sustainability is a major driver in the development and implementation of strategy and business operations in recent times. There is the call for organisations to develop sustainability agenda to ensure the long-term maintenance of systems economically, socially and environmentally. Although there is a growing body of literature in the developed countries on the sustainability agenda in the mining industry, in developing countries however; there is limited research conducted in the mining industry. This paper therefore investigated the types and implementation of the sustainability agenda in Ghana?s mining industry. Due to the scarce relevant research in this area and the peculiar cultural and administrative distance between developing and developed countries, this study adopted a qualitative research approach using the interview tool to develop a deeper meaning and understanding into the types and implementation of the sustainability agenda. Data was analysed using the thematic and narrative analysis.The findings showed that although sustainability agenda is practised in Ghana, the most prevalent types of sustainability agenda in Ghana?s mining industry took the form of Social interventions. For implementation, various programmes and activities are undertaken based on the social interventions.
