Abstract

The construction of a large stadium in a metropolis is a cost, an opportunity cost and an opportunity to boost the local economy. There are many incentives to build stadiums, particularly to obtain a franchise in a major American sport. The financing required is considerable and the financial profitability of stadiums proves very difficult, especially if the question of opportunity costs is introduced. On the other hand, the image of the city and the multiplier effects of the investments made justify public investment for American sport. However, the crowding-out effects are not negligible and the question is whether the creation of a stadium makes the city more attractive and whether there are no other means to achieve a similar goal at a lower cost.
