Abstract

Selling unpacked products or in bulk is a mode of distribution that currently experiences a renewed interest. Based on social practices theories, a framework, which is generally used at the individuals' level, this communication aims at understanding how bulk professionals' practices evolves and are renewed. It uses an ongoing qualitative study, based on interviews of distributors and suppliers but also on a systematic professional literature review. It highlights the material elements (such as specific shop-design and merchandising), competencies and meanings, which are associated with this kind of distribution. It also helps to understand the origins of barriers to its development in order to overcome them.
