El efecto del costo mínimo de contratación sobre la informalidad y el desempleo: un enfoque de regresión discontinua

Abstract

El costo mínimo de contratación formal –salario mínimo más costos laborales no salariales– aumentó 33.76% en Colombia entre 1992 y 2006. Este estudio estima el impacto de este choque sobre el mercado laboral por medio de una regresión discontinua nítida. Se encuentra un efecto positivo, significativo y robusto sobre la informalidad, especialmente cuando es medida por el tamano de la firma. Sin embargo, la significancia del efecto sobre el desempleo se desvanece ante distintos ejercicios de robustez realizados bajo métodos no paramétricos. Esto indica que el sector informal en Colombia ha presentado una gran capacidad de absorber la mano de obra expulsada del sector formal a raíz del incremento del salario mínimo y/o de los costos laborales no salariales.
