Historia, geografía y puerto como determinantes de la situación social de Buenaventura

Abstract

Buenaventura no sólo es uno de los puertos más importante de Colombia, sino que también hace parte del Valle del Cauca, uno de los departamentos más prósperos junto con Antioquia y Cundinamarca. Sin embargo, y pese a estas características, es uno de los municipios más pobres del país. Este documento hace mención de al menos tres particularidades que han incidido en la actual situación socio-económica de Buenaventura: las características geográficas, el legado histórico y el puerto. Las dos primeras han sido determinantes negativos, retrasando el proceso de crecimiento y desarrollo de la ciudad, y la tercera ha influido en forma positiva. Vale la pena mencionar que una de las causas de la pobreza en la ciudad es el alto desempleo. Sin embargo, no es posible reducirlo únicamente a través de las actividades portuarias. Existen otros importantes sectores productivos con gran potencial, tales como el forestal y el pesquero, los cuales podrían absorber gran parte del exceso de la mano de obra.
