Abstract

(Career paths of managers represent a little investigated field of research. Hence, this multidisciplinary study aims to explore the career paths of individuals in the occupational area of Investor Relations. To the main field of activity of investor relations belong the communication with investors and analysts, the preparation of reports and documents and the organisation of the general meeting. In Germany, this occupational area is a relatively new, which did not emerge until the turn of the millennium. Findings gained in this specific study can be widely used in career, sociological, and organizational research. The study is divided into two research areas: first, the description and second, the explanation of the career paths. A mixed-method design (sequential design) is applied and the analysis follows a research pragmatic approach to evaluate the data flexibly according to the research areas. The main result is that career-relevant factors are located at different levels, between individual micro-, organizational meso- and social macro-level. Important influencing factors for the career path are individual competences, social capital, corporate structure and actors and the professionalization of the occupational area. The analysis of career paths therefore requires an interdisciplinary approach.)
