Spatial Development Processes with Renewal in a Growing City

Abstract

Optimal spatial development processes with renewal in a growing city are studied by solving a long-term planning problem of urban land use in a monocentric city. Spatial development processes are classified according to the relative values of renewal cost and the relative length of the growth period of the city. Renewal processes are generally observed in the course of the spatial development processes unless renewal cost is extremely high. Since we do not consider depreciation of the building stock, urban renewal in this study is due solely to the efficiency of the spatial allocation of the building stock over time.
