Rational and effective use of energy in U.S. Industry

Abstract

An industrial company is basically an economic entity. Consequently its attitude towards more efficient use of energy is primarily determined by cost and not by energy scarcity. Whenever energy could be saved merely by improved housekeeping, appropriate measures have already been taken. However, in cases when energy saving requires a substantial investment, decisions are made on the basis of whether such investment is economically justified for a given industrial plant. Of late, energy efficiency improvements have been encouraged by spiralling energy costs. On the other hand, progress in this direction is hampered by the lack of consensus among various segments of society as to the priority of national values and by the vacillation of government policies in response to fluctuations in public opinion.
