On solar thermal processing and retorting of oil shale

Abstract

The general concept and a recent paper on solar oil-shale retorting are critically reviewed. We conclude that a recent paper by Berber and Fletcher contains erroneously high oil yields, specially for fluidized beds, and provides no new insights concerning solar oil-shape process design or economic evaluation. A brief examination of solar retorting indicates that this technique is probably far more expensive than conventional processing. A few guidelines are presented concerning the kinds of research that might be appropriate to aid process design and to make a more rigorous economic evaluation.
