Abstract

In Germany, the number of women in relationships who are in gainful employment is on the rise. According to recent calculations by DIW Berlin based on data from the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP), women contributed 30 percent of joint earnings among married and cohabiting couples in 2011, an increase of 3 percentage points on the year 2000. An important reason for this development is the increasing shift of women out of unemployment and into part-time and marginal employment, particularly in western Germany. In eastern Germany, where female employment and working hours have long been higher than in the West, women's contribution to joint income was almost 40 percent.
