Abstract

Abstract. Attracting qualified professionals to teaching is one of the most important education policy challenges facing Colombia. Offering a competitive compensation plan is a necessary condition to achieve this goal. In this paper, I analyze whether pay schedules for teachers in Colombia compensate the more productive teachers more than the less productive teachers, especially in light of recent reforms to education laws. Likewise, using the Colombian Household Surveys I compare teacher pay to that of other workers with similar characteristics by estimating a pay gap. I show that although teachers were paid less than comparable workers during the 1990´s, this gap has virtually disappeared
